BELS 3D Printing Service

A 3D print printing on a PLA printer.

Policies

Our 3D printing services are available to all UCSC students, staff, and faculty. However, priority is given to those associated with BSOE and prints needed for instructional purposes. With that said, we can usually accommodate all if you are not in a rush.

Once you submit your print, we will reply with a quote for the job. The quote is free and without any obligation. That is, you can decide after receiving the quote if you want to proceed with the print job.

All 3D prints are printed from resin and are printed using our Formlabs Form 2 printers.

Design

Prints need to be submitted in a .stl file format. STL (stereolithography) is a common file format for 3D CAD software.

Our 3D printer prints support structures attached to your design to reduce print failures. We kindly ask that you remove these support yourselves.

The build volume of our Formlabs Form 2 printer is 145 mm × 145 mm × 175 mm or 5.7 in x 5.7 in x 6.9 in. Keep in mind that the Form 2 will automatically build a support structure as necessary within this max build volume.

The standard resins come in a variety of colors. We generally have a couple of the more popular colors in stock. You can also get engineering resins with unique properties such as rigid, durable, flexible, etc. We might have one or more of these available, but generally, we only stock standard resins. If you need an engineering resin or a standard resin of a specific color, you should inquire about our current resin inventory by creating a ticket before submitting your print job.

Fees

The price of a print is $0.29/ml of standard resin used + $12 setup fee.

If you need a specific resin that we currently do not have in stock, there maybe additional costs, so check with us beforehand.

Keep in mind that the support structure that might be needed for your print can make up a significant percentage of the total cost of your print. The printer software automatically generates the support structure needed and is dependent on the size and shape of your desired print.
